Was in Elizabeth Town, NJ as early as 1665, when on 19 Fbruary he was fourth on the list of 65 persons who took thee oath of allegiance to King Charles II of England, and to the Proprietors of the province. He was the owner of 5 acres of valuable land in the center of town.

There are several traditions about the origin of the name. Some have claimed it was “Shadwell”
and others have said than an ancestor was an archer in a contest where the King said: “Shot well!”

Abraham Shotwell was probably among the Englishmen who fled Great Britain after the death of Cromwell and the restoration of Charles II to the throne. He was a bold and outspoken man against the “tyrannical and oppressive exactions” enforced by the Governor, Captain Philip Carteret. He went into exile (there is an undocumented story about a personal altercation with Carteret in which Shotwell threw him into a creek!) and his valuable property was sold at auction and acquired by Carteret on 25 April 1675. He retired to New York where he resided until his death around 1680 on a tract of land near what became the Brooklyn Bridge.130
