Founder of the New Jersey branch of the Ayers family. On 11 December 1666 John PIKE, Dan Pierce and seven others from Newbury, MA met and agreed on settlement plans and on 13 December 1667 they received a grant from Governor Carteret for lands in New Jersey which they settled and named Woodbridge after their friend Reverend John Woodbridge, who also became the first pastor or the local church. The township was officially chartered 1 June 1690. The original settlers were John PIKE, Daniel and his brother Joshua PIERCE, Obadiah AYRES, Henry JAQUES, Thomas Bloomfield, Elisha Parker, Richard Worth, John WHITAKER, Jonathan DUNHAM, Hugh DUNN, and Robert Van Quellen.99

Obadiah AYRES sold his Haverhill household to his brother Nathaniel AYRES in 1669 and on 8 August 1669 received 171 acres in what was to become Woodbridge.99

Between 1669 and 1670 Obadiah Ayres of Woodbridge received a Patent for (1) a houselot of 16 acres between Richard Worth on the South and John Adams on the South; (2) 5 acres of meadow on Papiack Creek between Samuel Moore and John Smith Scotchman; (3) 120 acres of upland, North of Langsters Farm (?Langstaff Farm?); (4) 30 acres of Raratons meadow; NJ Archives, Vol XXI, p. 11.78

On 23 December 1685 Obadiah Ayres deeded to his son John Ayres (both of Woodbridge, NJ) one half (about 60 acres) of his farm N of Langster’s Farm or Plain and 15 acres of Raraton R. (NJ Archives, Vol XXI, p. 67.) Note that fathers usually deeded land to their sons as they became old enough to marry and/or set up their own home; until they married, they usually remained at home.78

He was a Grand Jury member in 1884. When on 30 July 1673 a Dutch Squadron demanded and received surrender of local English land, Obadiah AYRES was one of three local citizens selected to be magistrates to the Dutch forces.99

289. Hannah PIKE100,44, daughter of 578. Captain John PIKE & 579. Mary TURVELL. Born on 26 Apr 1643 in Newbury, Essex County, MA.99,78,44 Hannah died in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ, on 30 May 1689; she was 46.44
292. Nicholas BONHAM.79 Born ca 1630 in Essex, Co., England.101,80,78 Nicholas died in Middlesex Co, Piscataway, NJ, on 20 Jul 1684; he was 54.101,80,78 Buried in Probably Bonhamtown, NJ.78 Occupation: Yeoman (Farmer).78 Religion: Baptist.78

Although many authors have reported that Nicholas Bonham was born in Essex England and arrive withi his father George Bonham, there is no proof of this parentge. He first appears in records of Piscataway, NJ in 1669.78

Signed oath of allegiance in 1672. Served as sergeant in 1681.79

Built the first house in Bonhamtown which stood for 200 years. According to the Archives in Rutgers, NJ it was a frame house, one and half stories high, with an entrance on the left sid into a living room, with kitchen in the rear, on the right side two bedrooms, a bedroom upstairs. In 1678 received a land grant of 122 acres in Middlesex County, NJ and had moved there and founded Bonhamtown by the time of the birth of his third child, Sarah, in 1665. Attested an oath as Sergeant Bonham in 1681 and served under a Captain Francis Drake. Settled the hamlet of Bonhamtown in about 1662 and helped found the Baptist Church in 1689.78

“The History of Piscataway Township 1660-1976” by Walter Mauly says that ‘Sergeant Bonham’ settled the hamlet of Bonhamtown east of Piscataway in Edison Township around 1682. He was a founder of the Baptist Church there in 1689.

In his will (written 6 Feb 1683/84 and proved 18 Dec 1684) he is called “yeoman.”

Apprenticed in Philadelphia and didn’t like his treatment so he went to Woodbridge, where he married upon reaching majority and returned to Philadelphia where he was prosecuted for breach of (apprenticeship) contract and fined £9. He then returned to Woodbridge where he settled and amassed a considerable estate.

First record of land acquisition is by deed from John Smith 1699-1700, Jan 20. This was for 60 acres at Whitewood Hill which became the home plantation of Henry and Elizabeth Freeman. All his children were apparently born there. The home was on the north side of the road leadning from Woodbridge to Uniontown (now Iselin) and was later called Squire Newton Farm. The Farm passed to Henry Jr and to his son Henry.44

297. Elizabeth BENUE44, daughter of 594. Ralph HALL. Elizabeth died in Woodbridge, NJ on 5 Dec 1760.44 Buried in Woodbridge, NJ.44

Confusion about her identity stems from the fact that in 1875 Nathaniel Fitz Randolph, Town Clerk of Woodbridge, copied the original town records. For a time the originals were thought lost or destroyed and his copy says her name is Bonne. However, the original records are at Special Collections, Alexander Library, Rutgers and show her name as Benue, not Bonne as some had supposed from the transcription in Woodbridge. Also, a marriage license granted in NYC for Jean Baignoux (would have been pronounced Benue) and Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph Hall, 6 December 1670 is in New York Historical Manuscripts, English: Books of General Entries of the Colony of New York, 1664–1803, pp. 16 and 309. This would make her a widow of Jean Baignoux and nee Hall. Additional evidence that Elizabeth was nee Benue/Baignoux is: (1) coincidence of the name and pronounciation; (2) named her daughter Ann Elizabeth, double given names common in French but not English families of the time; (3) family tradition that she was the daughter of a Huguenot.44
298. Isaac WALKER46,102, son of 596. Francis WALKER & 597. Elizabeth SOULE. Born ca 1667 in Plymouth Colony (?).46,102 Isaac died in NJ bef 27 Jul 1719; he was 52.46,102

The only documented child of Francis Walker and Elizabeth Soule. It is possible - but there is no evidence to support it - that Francis Walker married (2) Ann ______ and had further children as claimed by Monette and others.102

On 30 October 1701 Isaac and Desire Walker sold three tracts in Woodbridge and removed to Little Campton, RI about 1702. They appear to have returned to New Jersey before 1715. On 3 August 1716 they purchased a house and five acres in Piscataway, NJ.103

His wife refused to administer the estate.29
